I was in the Coast Guard in NYC from '84-'86. I was in and out of Port Newark a lot. I rode with NYC Ship Pilots.

It was common knowledge that the Container Carrier ships only required 2 men on the pier to unload.

The Union contract had grandfathered in that there would be 20 something Longshoremen assigned to each ship unloading. I cant remember the exact number but it was around 20.

This was a remnant of the WWII days when they actually needed that many men to load/unload a ship. And it probably predates that!

The fact is theres a ton of deadweight collecting checks in every port in America and you can bet that hasnt changed in the intervening 38 years.

Interesting side note. The Pilots Association jobs are handed down within families! You have to be born into it! They were great guys though and very friendly to me when I told them where I had been and what I had done.

I admit, I am still in shock and unable to fully come to terms with what has just happened. I love my father dearly, in spite of his flaws, much as he loved me the same. But I also love and admire him for his intelligence, his insightfulness, his resourcefulness, his fiendish charm, his irl shitposting. I was not ready for him to go this suddenly.

He faced a lot of demons of addiction in his youth and overcame them to have a family and land all his own. He was a force of will and fiercely protective of his people and possessions. He was a real man who lived a rough, honest life. Tackled every challenge put in his way unwaveringly: a true goat in spirit.
