The Plantation Overseer, usually a black man, as most Plantation Overseers were Black men, whipped Peter Gordon severely. When the Master found out, he fired the overseer. Later, Whipped Peter escaped to the Union North, and the Army saw the Scars on Whipped Peter as a great propaganda tool against Slavery, hence the infamous photo. But in reality, it was punishment due to a Black Man trying to kill his Black Wife.
“Overseer Artayou Carrier whipped me. I was two months in bed sore from the whipping. My master come after I was whipped; he discharged the overseer.”
